As Pool Safety Inspectors, it’s fair to say that over time we’ve seen it all! From the good, the bad, to the straight out frightening! Pool safety risks not only can place the children in danger but also swimming pool owners themselves when it comes to penalties, fines & legal actions.
Here’s a list of pool safety risks we encounter regularly that can be easily managed yourself to not only keep friend’s and family’s children safe, but also ensure you remain compliant.
Faulty gate latches are one of the most common risks resulting in not only failed safety inspections but children drownings. To be deemed compliant, a gate latch must catch and lock shut when the gate closes from any open position.
DIY TEST: If the gate bounces back open when hitting the latch, it will be deemed as faulty and non-compliant.
Tidying up the patio furniture, repotting so outdoor plants or even repositioning the barbeque. It doesn’t take much for an object to resemble a jungle gym by children wanting to venture into the pool!
DIY TEST: Walk the perimeter of your pool fence and see if there are any surface 10mm or greater that a child could grip onto, or leverage themselves up within 900mm of the top of the fence.
With First Aid Courses remaining on most people’s to-do list, CPR signs are vital in providing basic directions on how to save a life in a drowning incident. That’s why regulations state the Pool CPR signs must be current, clearly legible or easily visible from all areas of the pool.
DIY TEST: When was your Pool CPR sign updated? If more than 2 years, it’s probably time for a new one. Also, walk the area of the pool and see if the Pool CPR sign can be viewed free from obstructions.
